Located in Karnataka, around 22 kilometers from Bangalore, Bannerghatta National Park is a dream destination for nature and wildlife lovers. Established in 1974, it is one of the most important eco-tourism destinations in the state. The Park is home to a variety of flora and fauna, including 100 birds and over 48 butterfly species. making it a popular tourist spot and an important conservation area.
The park runs several conservation projects, including protecting the animals from habitat loss and poaching. These Bannerghatta National Park Projects also focus on improving facilities and infrastructure for the visitors. The Tiger conservation project is one of the most crucial projects of all. As the population of tigers has been declining in recent times, this project focuses on protecting them from becoming extinct.
The Elephant Conservation Project is one of the other important Bannerghatta National Park Projects. These projects focus on protecting elephants by putting efforts to improve their habitat quality and increasing the number of elephants in the park. The park runs several other conservation projects to protect other animals. All these projects are dedicated to the long survival of wildlife.

Lion Safari
Lion Safari at Bannerghatta National Park was established in 1979. This Lion Safari offers a great wildlife experience to all visitors while promoting conservation and eco-tourism.
During this thrilling Lion Safari, you will explore some off-beat paths of the National Park and witness these majestic lions in the wild. There are around 21 lions in the park of which 12 are females and 9 are male tigers. This was Bannerghatta Biological Park’s first safari to provide recreation and eco-tourism. Safari vehicles are specially designed to provide a thrilling experience and a chance to have closer views.
Lion Safaris are important in promoting conservation awareness about protecting these Majestic creatures. Learn about their behaviour, and observe hunting skills and roars.
Tiger Safari
With the success of Lion Safari at Bannerghatta National Park, in 1987 the Tiger Safari was also established at the park. This park houses around 33 tigers of which 7 are rare white tigers.
There are 3 groups of these tigers, two are kept in the enclosure and the third group remains in the forest area of the reserve and can be seen by visitors during their wildlife safari. Tiger Safaris allows visitors to observe these majestic animals in their natural habitat.
The Tiger Project in Karnataka is one of the crucial parts of Bannerghatta National Park Projects due to the declining population rate.
Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre
In 2000, a rescue and Rehabilitation center was established in the Bannerghatta National Park. This center provides care and protection to the orphaned and injured animals. With this Bannerghatta National Park Project, the Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre has rescued more than 100 sloth bears and European tigers. This center has a team of experienced wildlife experts and veterinarians who provide proper care to these animals.
There are some cases where the animals can not be released, but the center provides lifelong care and habitat for these animals. With the establishment of this center Bannerghatta National Park projects have shown its commitment to animal welfare and the importance of conservation providing the animals a 2nd chance to live.
Butterfly Park
The butterfly park, established in 2007 is a unique part of Bannerghatta National Park Projects. This is a collaboration between the Indian Government, the Biotechnology Department, and the Agricultural Sciences University. Spreading over an area of 7.5 acres, this butterfly park is a butterfly lover’s paradise, offering a chance to spot these colorful creatures in their fascinating world. This park has a research laboratory and a butterfly conservatory which houses around 48 butterfly species.
This conservatory has a controlled environment for their development and breeding. The butterfly park is not just a tourist spot, but it is also a valuable resource for research and education, promoting butterfly conservation.

Upgrading Existing Safari Units
Bannerghatta National Park is undergoing a project to upgrade its existing safari units. This ongoing Bannerghatta National Park project is a part of the 2014–2033 Master Plan, dedicated to enhancing visitor’s experience and improving the park’s overall management. improvement and expansion of safari units like bear, tiger, lion, and herbivore have been done to provide a more exciting and immersing experience.
To create a larger Safari experience tiger and lion safaris are amalgamated, allowing visitors to spot the predators in the wild. It is decided that herbivore safari should be used rotationally, to the main ecosystem and reduce animal stress.
These Ongoing Projects are dedicated to ensuring a world-class wildlife experience and animal well-being.
Conservation Breeding Programs
Bannerghatta National Park has initiated Conservation Breeding Programs which come under the master plan period of 2014 to 2033. The main objective of this program is to breed endangered species and introduce them to their natural habitats. It is crucial to manage these breeding pairs properly with utmost care and provide a suitable environment for them to survive.
These conservation breeding programs will result in the recovery of these endangered species. It can’t be seen publicly but the dedication of Bannerghatta National Park towards these conservation efforts is proof.
Veterinary Section Upgrades
Bannerghatta National Park is dedicated to providing proper care and rescuing the animals. For this, a special team of experienced veterinarians has been appointed to provide proper care to the animals. With the ongoing improvement plan from 2014 to 2033, the park focuses on upgrading these Veterinary sections to improve overall facilities. A hi-tech hospital building is under construction that will have all the advanced medical equipment.
Quarantine Areas are being made to isolate new and infected animals for the safety of others. For more effectiveness, these Veterinary Sections will also have enhanced clinical tools.
Visitor Amenities
Bannerghatta National Park is taking initiatives to improve some visitors’ amenities to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience for the visitors. This Bannerghatta National Park project is currently in progress and is expected to be completed by 2033.
Some key factors that are going to be changed or added to visitor amenities include proper water supply, spacious and well-maintained parking space, shaded seating areas and rest shelters, a play area for children, and Interpretation Centers.
This will not only result in improving visitor experience, but it will also enhance the overall park’s sustainability.
Zoo Expansion
The zoo expansion project is one of the essential ongoing Bannerghatta National Park Projects. The main goal of the Zoo Expansion project is to increase Zoo’s size from 12.54 hectares to 41.08 hectares.
Expanding the zoo area will result in increasing the space for making new areas similar to the natural habitat of animals. This will not only be beneficial for animals but it will also result in improving exhibits and enhanced educational opportunities.
This project is expected to be completed by 2033 and it promises a wonderful zoological experience in the upcoming years.

Leopard Safari

Zoo Education Center and Amphitheater
Zoo education centers and Amphitheater come under Bannerghatta upcoming Projects, which were planned during the later stages of the master plan. Establishing the Zoo Education Center and Amphitheater will result in improving visitor engagement and educational visits. To keep visitors engaged and entertained, the education center will conduct educational programs and workshops, which will make the place perfect for school educational visits. Butterfly Park Upgrades
The butterfly park at Bannerghatta National Park is set to expand and undergo some upgrades in the mid-to-late phases of the master plan. These upgrades in the butterfly park are dedicated to enhancing visitor’s educational experience. After completion of the Butterfly Park Upgrades, visitors will get to see particular insectariums to showcase a wide range of insects like mantises, beetles, and dragonflies.
To attract more species of butterflies, some special gardens will be cultivated at the National Park. and to enhance comfort and accessibility, the park’s infrastructure will also be improved.
This infrastructure improvement may include proper shaded seating areas, smooth paths, and more restrooms. This will result in elevating the status of Butterfly Park and will support the idea of conservation efforts.
Elephant Care Center
Bannerghatta National Park projects are dedicated to ensuring the well-being of elephants which are around 127. This park will have a separate elephant care center that will provide proper care and rehabilitation to these playful mammals. These centers will have spacious land and veterinary centers. The park will also provide a healthy and nutritious diet to them ensuring a healthy lifestyle. These elephant care centers will be dedicated to focusing on their behavioral, and health issues, and getting them trained.

Butterfly Park Upgrades
The Bannerghatta National Park projects are dedicated to Research and Conservation. The establishment of Research and Conservation Facilities was Proposed within the 20-year plan, which includes a separate Research center to support wildlife research. Here visitors will get to see libraries and labs, making this place ideal for educational visits.
The park also plans to improve the veterinary records, which will help keep health updates and improve global knowledge.
